HMAS ONSLOW underwent a modernisation refit from 1982 until 1984 and  became the first conventionally powered submarine in the world to be fitted with guided anti-ship missiles. Her pendant number became SSG 60 ONSLOW.
HMAS ONSLOW was decommissioned from service on 30 March 1999 and gifted to the Australian National Maritime Museum in April 1999 and docked next to HMAS VAMPIRE. She was officially opened to the public on 1 June 1999
