The USS CHICAGO CA 136 was decommissioned 06 June 1947 and put in reserve at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. On 01 November 1958 she was reclassified as USS CHICAGO CG 11 ( Guided missile cruiser ) and towed to the San Francisco Naval Shipyard to begin a 5 year conversion.
Recommissioned on 02 May 1964 as CG 11 CHICAGO. Decommissioned on 01 March 1980 and put in reserve at the Inactive ship Facility at Bremerton, Washington. The ship was stricken from the Naval Register on 31 January 1983.
On 9 December 1991 she was sold for scrap to Southwest Recycling Inc Terminal Island California.
