The project to built the first French nuclear submarine ( SSN ) was laid down on 02 07 1955 with the hull number Q.244 at the shipyard DCAN at Cherbourg, France.
In 1958 the construction was stopped because of the problems to built a nuclear reactor using natural uranium. The whole project was abandoned in 1959.
The front and back of the hull were used for the construction of the S 655 GYMNOTE constructionnumber Q.251 a experimental ballistic missiles launcher submarine in 1963.
A part of the original hull is used as an experimental and accoustical test bench at Toulon, France.
