She was stricken from the Naval Register on 20 November 1992 and laid up at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for donation to the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum at Bay City , Michigan.
As the movement of the ship proved to be too expensive the project was abandone
As of September 2008, Charles F. Adams remains at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on Donation Hold status. She was considered for preservation by the Adams Class Veteran's Association and the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association.

In december 2018 the plans were also abandoned and she will  likely been sold for scrap.
