Service as a fleet ballistic missile submarine from 1962 - 1980 the USS JOHN MARSHALL was reclassified as an attack submarine with pendant number SSN 611 on 12 January 1981.
Her last Polaris missile was removed on 1 June 1981.
At the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard she was decommissioned on 22 July 1992 and simultaneously stricken from the Naval Register. She was disposed to the ( NPSSRP ) Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program on 29 March 1993
